Allow Me To Not Help

What is one question you hate to be asked? Explain.

Typically I like being questioned. I assume the person asking has taken an interest in me and I’m elated to share because I’d consider myself a fairly interesting person, right? But there’s ONE question that triggers me in the worst way. It’s not the question itself but it’s the timing in which I’m asked.

For example, a few years ago my older brother was in a major motorcycle accident that left him clinging to his life for days so of course naturally people reached out offering their help and support. It’s much appreciated yes but then there are those people that ask “Are you okay?”

Despite being visibly “NOT OKAY” being asked that question while grieving is dumb and it makes me want to crumble when I’m trying my best not to.

  1. This spoke to me. I have my own issues with that question in such cases, for largely the same reasons.

What do you think might be a better question to for someone to show support when perhaps they don’t know what else to ask?

    1. I personally prefer people say nothing except “I’m here if you need me” as it gives me the space and time I need to process whatever I’m experiencing. But in general , for less serious things if someone just wants to know how I am doing. I prefer to ask and be asked, how are you feeling? And for people I’m really close to I ask “how’s your heart?”
